40 Years, 40 Alumni: Daniel Kasambira on the Power of One Connection

Part of our series celebrating Leadership Greater Huntsville's 40th anniversary by spotlighting 40 alumni whose lives and careers have been shaped by the program.

 

Daniel Kasambira, now President and CEO of United Way of Madison County, describes his time in Leadership Greater Huntsville's L-27 class in simple terms: life-changing.

"Leadership Huntsville has been one of the most life changing experiences in my personal and professional journey," Kasambira says. "The relationships I built through L-27 became lifelong friendships and meaningful partnerships that continue to impact our community."

 

A Career Changed by People Who Believed In Him

For Kasambira, LGH wasn't just a program he completed — it was a turning point that reshaped the direction of his career. He's quick to name the people who made that possible.

Dr. Pam Hudson and Dana Gillis nominated him for the program. Joe Collazo and Lori King-Taylor, his Steering Committee Chairs, along with Leadership staff Sarah Savage-Jones and Jenny Askins, saw something in him and helped connect him to the broader Huntsville community.

"These relationships have ultimately led me to my role as President and CEO of United Way Madison County," Kasambira says.

It's a chain of small acts of belief — a nomination here, an introduction there — that added up to a career trajectory Kasambira might never have predicted on his own.

 

The Lesson: Relationships Are Everything

Ask Kasambira what single lesson from LGH has stayed with him, and the answer comes without hesitation.

"The greatest lesson I've learned and still carry with me is the power and value of relationships," he says.

That belief runs through everything else he shares about his LGH experience. As he puts it, Leadership Huntsville showed him how one connection, one opportunity, or one person believing in someone can spark change that ripples across an entire career — and an entire community.

 

Rooted More Deeply in Madison County

Professional success is only part of the story for Kasambira. When asked about his proudest accomplishment since completing the program, he points to something less tangible but arguably more important: a deeper connection to the place he serves.

"While I am blessed by what I have accomplished professionally, LGH gave me something even more meaningful — the opportunity to become more deeply ingrained in the Madison County community," he says. Through the relationships, experiences, and exposure the program provided, Kasambira developed a stronger understanding of — and commitment to — the community he now leads a major nonprofit within.

 

Leadership as Stewardship

Asked to define what Leadership Greater Huntsville means to him in a single sentence, Kasambira frames it as a call to intentional service:

"Leadership Greater Huntsville has encouraged me to be intentional in playing my part using relationships, experiences, and influence I've been entrusted with to serve others and hopefully make a meaningful difference in our community."

From a nomination in L-27 to the helm of United Way of Madison County, Daniel Kasambira's story is a testament to what LGH set out to do 40 years ago — and what it continues to do today: connect people, build trust, and turn that trust into community impact.
