40 Years, 40 Alumni: Mark Russell, "It takes a village."

For Mark Russell, Leadership Greater Huntsville was more than a professional development experience—it was a catalyst for a life of community service.

A graduate of Leadership Greater Huntsville Class 9, Mark says his LGH experience helped shape his commitment to serving Huntsville. While attending a city council meeting, he witnessed firsthand the discord taking place and began thinking about how he could help ensure the council more effectively represented the community. That experience ultimately motivated Mark to step forward and run for office, beginning what would become 16 years of service on the Huntsville City Council.

“Serving on the city council for 16 years has been a tremendous honor,” Mark shared. “Leadership Greater Huntsville played a pivotal role in preparing me for that service, providing both the motivation and the high-quality training that strengthened my work on the council.”

Today, Mark serves as Executive Director of the Huntsville Sports Commission, continuing his commitment to building a stronger community through his work.

And the lesson he learned through LGH remains simple, but powerful: it takes a village.

That spirit of collective leadership has been at the heart of Leadership Greater Huntsville for 40 years. Great communities are not built by one person alone. They are built by people who step forward, learn from one another, work together, and recognize that each of us has a role to play.

When asked what Leadership Greater Huntsville means to him in one sentence, Mark kept it simple:

“Leadership Greater Huntsville means a better community.”

For 40 years, that has been the impact of LGH—equipping people to lead, connecting them to one another, and inspiring them to invest in the community they call home.

We are proud to celebrate Mark Russell, LGH Class 9, as one of our 40 Alumni during LGH’s 40th anniversary year.
